About this plant
The leaves of Mentha x piperita contain menthol, a cyclic monoterpene that activates the TRPM8 cold receptor and relaxes gastrointestinal smooth muscle. Peppermint oil in enteric-coated capsules has well-established use for irritable bowel syndrome. First identified as a distinct species in 1696 in Hertfordshire, England. Added to the London Pharmacopoeia in 1721.
