About this plant
The leaves of Tussilago farfara contain mucilage polysaccharides that soothe irritated airways, and tussilagine, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid. The Latin name literally means cough-suppressor, from tussis (cough) and agere (to drive away). One of the oldest cough remedies in European medicine, documented by Dioscorides and Pliny. Flowers appear before leaves in early spring across Scandinavian roadsides.
