About this plant

The dried fruit of Piper nigrum contains piperine, an alkaloid that enhances the bioavailability of co-administered compounds by inhibiting hepatic enzymes. Called Black Gold in antiquity, pepper was so valuable it served as currency across the Roman Empire. Native to India's Malabar Coast, pepper was the primary spice that motivated Vasco da Gama's voyage to India in 1498.
