About this plant
The leaves and hull of Juglans regia contain juglone, a naphthoquinone with antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and the kernels are rich in alpha-linolenic acid and ellagic acid. The Doctrine of Signatures held that walnuts cure head ailments because the kernel resembles a brain, and modern research has indeed confirmed neuroprotective properties. Cultivated since at least 7000 BCE in Persia. The name derives from Latin Jovis glans, meaning Jupiter's nut.
