About this plant

The dried rhizome of Iris florentina, known as orris root, develops a violet-like fragrance over three to five years of aging as irones form through oxidative degradation of iridals. One of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery, valued at up to ten times the price of silver by weight. The fleur-de-lis, based on the iris flower, became the royal symbol of the French monarchy and remains one of the most recognised heraldic emblems in history.
