About this plant

The root of Cephaelis ipecacuanha contains emetine, an isoquinoline alkaloid with powerful antimicrobial properties, first used by the Tupi people of Brazil. In 1680, physician Helvetius received sole selling rights from King Louis XIV. The formula was made public in 1688, making ipecac one of the first globally traded plant medicines. The root became a cornerstone of European and colonial pharmacology for over two centuries.
