About this plant

The rhizome of Veratrum album contains over 50 steroidal alkaloids, including jervine, which causes cyclopia in livestock via Sonic hedgehog pathway interference. This discovery led to the identification of the hedgehog signalling pathway, now a major target in cancer therapy. Hippocrates documented its use as a powerful purging remedy. Easily confused with the edible Gentiana lutea, causing fatal poisonings.
