About this plant
The bark and berries of Rhamnus cathartica contain anthraquinone glycosides, including emodin, physcion and frangulin, that act as stimulant laxatives after conversion by gut bacteria. Fresh bark must be aged one to two years before use, as fresh material causes severe gastrointestinal irritation. Known in Anglo-Saxon medicine before the Norman Conquest.
