About this plant
The trunk oleoresin of Toluifera pereirae contains benzyl benzoate, an antiparasitic agent, and benzyl cinnamate, an antimicrobial. The name Balsam of Peru is famously misleading, as the tree grows in Central America, not Peru. Pope Pius V authorised it as a substitute for Egyptian balsam in Catholic anointing oil in 1571.
