About this plant
The root bark of Sassafras albidum contains safrole, now classified as carcinogenic and FDA-banned since 1960. Choctaw invented filé gumbo with powdered leaves. One of the first American exports, it was the second-largest export from British colonies after tobacco. Charles Hires created root beer with sassafras in 1876, reformulated after the ban.
