About this plant
The latex of Castilloa elastica contains cis-1,4-polyisoprene, the compound known as natural rubber. The word Olmec means rubber people. The oldest rubber balls in the world, dating to 1700-1200 BCE, were discovered at the Olmec site of El Manatí. Mesoamericans discovered that mixing the latex with morning glory juice improved elasticity, a technique predating Goodyear's vulcanisation by 3,000 years.
