About this plant
The bark and leaves of Hamamelis virginiana contain hamamelitannin and proanthocyanidins, potent astringent tannins traditionally used topically for skin inflammation, wounds, and haemorrhoids. Cherokee, Mohegan, Iroquois and Potawatomi peoples all used witch hazel extensively. European settlers adopted it directly from indigenous healers.
