About this plant
The dried bark of Frangula alnus contains glucofrangulin A and B, anthraquinone glycosides with well-established laxative use. Fresh bark must be aged at least one year before medicinal use, as it causes severe gastrointestinal distress. It grows as far north as the 68th parallel in Scandinavia, one of few medicinal trees at such northern latitudes. Norwegian name trollved means troll-wood.
