About this plant
The leaves of Erythroxylum coca contain approximately 0.5-1% cocaine, a tropane alkaloid first isolated by Albert Niemann in 1860. In 1884, Karl Koller demonstrated cocaine as the first effective local anaesthetic for eye surgery, one of the most important discoveries in surgical history. Sigmund Freud advocated its use in his 1884 publication Über Coca.
