About this plant
All parts of Hyoscyamus niger contain hyoscyamine and scopolamine, tropane alkaloids that cross the blood-brain barrier. A key ingredient in the medieval spongia somnifera, soaked with henbane, opium and mandrake for pre-surgical anaesthesia. Known as Herba Apollinaris, the sacred plant of Apollo, documented in medicine since at least 4000 BCE.
