About this plant

All parts of Datura stramonium contain the tropane alkaloids hyoscyamine and scopolamine, anticholinergics that block the parasympathetic nervous system. Native to Central America, the plant reached Europe after the Columbian exchange. Victorian pharmacies sold stramonium cigarettes for asthma. Young plants contain more scopolamine; mature plants more hyoscyamine.
