About this plant
All parts of Colchicum autumnale contain colchicine, an alkaloid that inhibits microtubule polymerisation and has been used to treat gout for over 3,000 years. First recorded in the Ebers Papyrus around 1500 BCE. Named for Colchis on the Black Sea coast, homeland of the mythological sorceress Medea.
