About this plant
The flowering tops of Cannabis sativa contain THC, the principal psychoactive phytocannabinoid, and cannabidiol, now FDA-approved for certain epilepsies. In 1964, Gaoni and Mechoulam determined THC's complete chemical structure. William O'Shaughnessy introduced cannabis to Western pharmacology in 1839. Included in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1851 to 1942.
