About this plant
The rhizome of Alpinia officinarum contains galangin, a flavonol with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Known as liangjiang in TCM, galangal has been used for digestive complaints for over 2,000 years. Hildegard von Bingen prescribed it in the 12th century as a spice of life. The spice travelled west along the Silk Road to reach medieval European apothecaries.
