About this plant
The fruit pulp of Tamarindus indica is rich in tartaric acid, giving tamarind its characteristic sour flavour, alongside polysaccharides with mild laxative properties. Despite its name indica, tamarind originated in tropical Africa and was carried to India in prehistoric times. The Arabic name tamar hindi literally means Indian date. A cornerstone of Ayurvedic digestive medicine.
