About this plant

The root of Rheum officinale contains anthraquinone glycosides including sennosides and rhein that stimulate colonic peristalsis, alongside tannins that provide an astringent secondary effect. One of the oldest drugs in Chinese medicine, documented in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing. Traded along the Silk Road for millennia. The name rhubarb derives from rha barbarum, the barbarian plant from the Volga.
