About this plant
The leaves of Pilocarpus jaborandi contain pilocarpine, a muscarinic receptor agonist whose total synthesis remains commercially unviable, meaning it is still extracted entirely from the plant. The Tupi-Guaraní name means what causes slobbering mouth. Pilocarpine eye drops are a WHO Essential Medicine for glaucoma. Brazil is currently the only global supplier.
