About this plant

The rhizome of Hydrastis canadensis contains berberine, a bright yellow isoquinoline alkaloid with antimicrobial and metabolic properties, and hydrastine, a smooth-muscle stimulant. Cherokee used it as antiseptic, tonic and yellow dye. Listed in CITES Appendix II since 1997 due to overharvesting. The myth it masks drug tests originated from an 1900 mystery novel.
