About this plant

The leaves of Ilex paraguariensis contain caffeine, theobromine, and chlorogenic acid. The Guaraní people believed mate was a gift from the moon goddess Yari. Jesuit missionaries domesticated the plant, creating one of the most successful colonial agricultural enterprises. Today consumed by over 90% of Argentine households.
