About this plant
The rhizome of Acorus calamus contains β-asarone, a CNS-active compound at the centre of a major safety controversy: carcinogenic in the European triploid variety, yet virtually absent in the North American diploid variety. Used in European folk medicine as a stomach bitter since antiquity. Medieval Europeans confused calamus with iris for centuries.
