About this plant

The thallus of Cetraria islandica contains lichenan and isolichenan, unique polysaccharides that form a soothing protective film on irritated mucous membranes. This remarkable lichen, not a plant but a symbiosis of fungus and alga, grows across Scandinavian highlands and Arctic tundra. Traditionally used for dry coughs and loss of appetite. A staple of Icelandic folk medicine for centuries.
